CA Newsletter: Fresh Meat Signups

March 29, 2024

Hey gamers!

Next week is Fresh Meat sign-ups. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE NEWSLETTER FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO SIGN UP. If you do not read the information carefully, you may miss your opportunity to table at the event.

WHAT IS FRESH MEAT?

Fresh Meat is SVA’s annual in-house comics fair, where the school’s talented students have the opportunity to exhibit their self-published comics and prints. From 5-9PM on Friday, May 3rd, the SVA Student Center (217 E 23rd St) will be transformed into a bustling marketplace of unique work. Organized by your very own Cartoon Allies, Fresh Meat has been the annual highlight of SVA’s cartoonists and illustrators for over two decades.

Fresh Meat began in 2001 as the SVA Comics Festival, first organized by Raina Telgemeier, who was our ambitious student body president and is now a New York Times bestselling cartoonist (Smile, Drama, Sisters). This first event featured such exhibitors as Dash Shaw (BodyWorld) and Tintin Pantoja (Who is AC?), and has since hosted other notable alumni such as Laura Knetzger (Bug Boys) and Molly Ostertag (Strong Female Protagonist). Fresh Meat continues to be the premier event to meet the rising talent in the next generation of cartoonists.

HOW TO SIGN UP

Cartoon Allies will be hosting sign ups at our meeting on Friday, March 29th, at 6:30PM in our club room, 701G of the 380 2nd Ave (Library) building. Space is LIMITED, so tables will be first come, first serve. Please respect each other and line up for the meeting in an orderly fashion so as to not disrupt classes, faculty, and other students.

If you would like to sign up as an INDIVIDUAL, you must attend the meeting and sign up. You will have one space (1/3rd of a table) provided for you with a chair and a 2.5 by 2ft space to display your items.

If you would like to sign up as a GROUP, you must have 1-3 people from your group attend the meeting to sign up individually and write in the section provided that they represent your group. Please come prepared with an agreed upon name for your group. Groups will be seated together.

If 1 person from your group signs up, you will have one space (1/3rd of a table) provided for you with a chair and a 2.5 by 2ft space to display your items.

If 2 people from your group sign up, you will have two spaces (2/3rds of a table) provided for you with two chairs and a 2.5 by 4ft space to display your items.

If 3 people from your group sign up, you will have three spaces (one full table) provided for you with three chairs and a 2.5 by 6ft space to display your items.

THERE CAN ONLY BE AS MANY PEOPLE SEATED AT YOUR SPACE AS THERE ARE SEATS PROVIDED. Groups may represent as many artists as you like, but there is a maximum of one table (3 people signed up) per group.

What if I can't get a table?

Unfortunately, we only have so much space available. If you are unable to get a table, we will add you to our waitlist. We will then notify artists in order if a space becomes available.

Table Etiquette

Students can display work of any medium they would like at their table, as long as it’s for sale. Students are encouraged to sell original work, and to show off their individual style by decorating their table space (and wall space, if applicable to your table) as they wish. Generic tablecloths will also be provided, though if you are sharing 1/3rd of a table with other students, you may want to bring your own cloth to differentiate your section. Fanart is welcome at Fresh Meat.

The Student Center has graciously allowed us to use their space for the fair, so let’s make sure we respect the facility and its staff! Please avoid using things like glitter or adhesive (use artists tape), and be sure to clean up your space so we leave the Student Center just like we found it!

We hope to see you soon!

Hello gamers.

Thanks to everyone who came to see us at MoCCA Fest! It was a blast to share the work of you talented people with all the con-goers.

This week we’ll have a highly anticipated guest speaker—Yugo Limbo! If you haven’t heard the Cartoon Allies officers gushing over their debut graphic novel Be Kind My Neighbor, a gorgeous, horrifying, and oddly wholesome love story featuring murder, cults, and puppets, you’re in for a treat! You may have seen let’s plays of the cult-hit indie game Smile for Me, which they created as part of the two-person game studio Limbolane. Their latest graphic novella about a humble tailor drawn to a beautiful puppet, Viscera Objectica, was recently released by Silver Sprocket. Yugo Limbo is a “peculiar cheese of the LGBT variety” whose work is a mix of 60’s psychedelia, 70’s European cartoons, and folk horror. We hope you’ll join us on Zoom for an interview and Q&A with one of CA staff’s favorite artists!
